Unlocking Opportunity Implementation Team Update
Our sincere gratitude to the College community on the progress we are making with Unlocking Opportunity: The Post-Graduation Success and Equity Network efforts.
As you recall, we have established three primary goals: redesigning our advising model, improving Gateway English and Math outcomes, and improving post-graduation outcomes through program mapping. I am proud to report that, thanks to your hard work, significant progress has been made in all three areas.
Advising Reimagined
Since our last update, twelve of thirteen student success coaches have been hired and are actively advising students. These coaches have completed a three-day intensive training. They are engaged in monthly professional learning sessions designed to provide them with relevant information and skills to advise, guide, and support student success. Moving forward, we are working to update our current technology to reflect the student success coach advising model. A labor management subcommittee is also meeting to recommend options for teaching faculty to fulfill their contractual obligation. Those recommendations will be presented to the Labor-Management Committee during the Spring 2025 semester.
Gateway English and Math
Our English and math faculty have been working to increase engagement with the Tutoring & Academic Assistance Center (TAAC). The results have been impressive! The number of students seeking math support in the Fall 2024 semester nearly doubled compared to the Fall 2023 figures. The numbers are even more dramatic when you look at English courses. Only 121 students sought support in the Fall 2023 semester compared to 485 in the Fall 2024 semester.
In January 2025, English faculty participated in the Winter Teaching Institute and continue to engage in professional development related to student engagement and belonging.
The Math Department has increased its co-requisite offerings for its highest enrolled gateway courses, MTH-150 (Survey of Mathematics) and MTH-160 (Stats I) over the last few semesters. Moreover, it developed a new co-requisite for MTH-165 (College Algebra), which is currentlyslated to run this fall.
The Mathematics Department is currently collaborating with colleagues in other disciplines to develop a summer professional learning institute focused on enhanced course design and delivery to improve student success outcomes.
The cross-disciplinary Developmental Education Committee has been established and will begin meeting this semester.
Program Mapping
The Program Review Redesign Committee is expected to report its findings and present a proposal to Provost/VP Jacobs by mid-semester.
College Now/Dual Enrollment operations are refining their offerings to enhance alignment with MCC’s programs and expand intentional pathways. The development of a transfer tool brochure is also in progress. MCC’s new website will help implement revised program information webpages. A vacancy announcement for the College Now/Dual Enrollment K-12 Coordinator will be posted soon. The program assessment platform RFP is almost complete, and data integration should start this spring.
Summary of Anticipated Next Steps
- Advising Reimagined
- A workgroup is meeting to create a comprehensive gap assessment analysis to discover areas where streamlined technologies can support the primary and secondary advisor assignments. Enrollment Management and the Student Success and Strategic Initiatives areas are working on an intent-to-enroll process.
- English
- English faculty are working on a one-credit lab for English 101 students to be piloted in Fall 2025.
- Math
- An update on the status of co-requisite math courses will be provided. The group will also revisit math-guided self-placement, which has been on hold for two years.
- Program Mapping
- The Program Review Redesign Committee’s mid-semester report will provide key recommendations for improving program mapping. These insights will help refine MCC’s approach to aligning academic programs with student needs and institutional goals. MCC is working to map programs with select 4-year partner schools. This work will involve a deep review of our curriculum to ensure our students can move seamlessly from MCC to the school of their choice.
Again, on behalf of the entire Unlocking Opportunity Implementation Team, we thank everyone for their hard work and collaboration. It is an exciting time for Monroe Community College. Our history of innovation inspires us to move forward with a laser focus on our mission to catalyze bright futures for our community and its people.
