Celebrating Black Excellence at MCC: Vol. 2

Did you know? Black History Month is celebrated around the world. While it originated in the U.S., other countries have embraced similar celebrations to honor Black history and contributions.

  • United States – Black History Month evolved from “Negro History Week,” founded by Carter G. Woodson in 1926. It became a month-long celebration in 1976.
  • Canada – Recognized nationally in 1995 after a motion by Dr. Jean Augustine, the first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament.
  • United Kingdom – Observed every October since 1987, with a focus on the contributions of Africa and the African diaspora.
  • Germany – Celebrated since 1990, focusing on Afro-German identity, history, and societal diversity.
  • Panama – May is Black Heritage Month, with May 31 recognized as National Black Heritage Day.
  • The Netherlands – Celebrates Black Achievement Month every October with performances and cultural events.
  • Australia – Observes Blak History Month in July, celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history.
  • Costa Rica – Declared August as the Month of the History of African-Descended Peoples in 2018, expanding Black People's Day (August 31). (Essence Magazine)

As we close out our Black History Month spotlights, we honor Ms. Melissa Browning, Ms. Kamilla Claiborne, and Dr. Gloria Morgan—three individuals whose dedication and leadership continue to shape and inspire our community. Their work is a testament to the power of education, advocacy, and excellence.

Thank you for joining us in celebrating Black excellence at MCC this month. While Black history is honored in February, we recognize and uplift these contributions every day.
