Services Offered

The TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) program offers services that teach students how to negotiate the college experience. These services include:

Orientation Resources

TRiO Provides an informational session a week before classes start each semester to help students understand what available services TRiO and the MCC campus provides. In addition to this, students will meet their Peer Mentors, Academic Coaches, and Advisor and will receive some school supplies to help with their classes.

Academic Support and Resources

Advisement

This service provides one-on-one academic assistance for all SSS students. SSS students are encourage to meet with their advisor at least one to two times a semester. Here they can get assistance with course registration, major selection, assistance with completing their FASFA, scholarship exploration, understanding student loans, credit card management, connecting with other departments and services across campus, and more! Having proactive advising creates a strong and consistent bond between participants and the MCC campus community.

Academic Coaching & Workshops

Academic Coaches create individual plans that focus on improving SSS students’ academic performance each semester. SSS students are encourage to meet with their Academic Coach at least one to two times a semester. Here they can attend workshops on how to using a planner, learn how to get the most out of a textbook, note-taking strategies, time management skills, test taking strategies and test anxiety tips, planning out a writing process, understanding how to use SMART goals, and much more!

Tutoring

In collaboration with the Tutoring and Academic Assistance Center (TAAC), SSS students will receive free one-on-one course support within any of their semester courses. TRIO advisors will refer SSS students to the TAAC and will assist with making their appointments.

Technology Assistance

Our TRIO space equips our SSS students with all their technology needs. These include computers, reliable internet, printers, a quiet study space, and assistance on technology issues.

Cultural and Social Engagement Events

The TRIO SSS program sponsors cultural events each semester to give SSS students the opportunity to explore enriched activities across the MCC campus and within the surrounding community. These events include special guest speakers and open discussions.

Financial Literacy & FASFA Assistance

Financial literacy is available to all SSS students accepted to the program. It is an education program that uses online resources, one-on-one consultations, workshops, and campus referrals. All TRIO participants must complete the Financial Literacy 1-1-Financial Basics- online training as part of the enrollment process.

Post-Graduation Preparation

Transfer Advisement

The aim of this service is to ensure a smooth transition from MCC to an SSS students desired 4-year institution. Here TRIO will connect SSS students with an MCC transfer specialist and make a personalized plan.

4- Year College Visits

TRIO SSS staff encourages students to transfer to a 4-year institution to continue their education towards a Bachelor’s degree. SSS students will have the opportunity to tour campuses such as the University of Rochester, University of Buffalo, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. John Fisher University, Buffalo State University, SUNY Brockport, SUNY Geneseo, and more! College visits expose SSS students to the transfer process, admission requirements, financial aid opportunities, and campus life.

Career Exploration & Internships

TRIO SSS students will be able to connect with MCC’s Career Services and explore a variety of career paths, internships, and apprenticeships in the area. In addition to this, TRIO will organize career-related trips where SSS students have the opportunity to visit business establishments such as the Red Wings semi-professional baseball organization and see first hand how they operate.
